Lunar Gardening - February

Waning Moon - 1st February to 13h February

Vegetables

Plant onion sets, sow peas, chard and spinach. In a protected corner sow spring salads.
Time to get some more peas in and sow some spring salads. I'll give the chard and spinach a miss I think.

Orchard

On the first warm day(s) prune peach, apricot and plum trees. Cover the biggest cuts with a healing "glue"!
Bit out of synch as we pruned peach and apricots last month, will try harder next year.

Prune the vines because "He who prunes dormant buds reaps an abundent harvest."
We did away with the vines, so no need to worry about this chore!

Garden

Begin pruning bay trees. Complete the working over of the earth. Mow the lawn, aeriate and add a good feed.
Lawn definitely needs attention, lots of dead looking patches. Have started the aeriating between rainy days!

Waxing Moon - 15th February to 27th February so I guess the 14th (New Moon) and 28th (Full Moon) are the gardener's days off

Vegetables

In the greenhouse, in heated beds, sow aubergine, peppers and tomatoes.
No greenhouse, so we'll skip this for now. I do better with seedlings bought from either the local markets or garden centres any way.

Outdoors start sowing carrots, radishes and rocket.
Okay, carrot and rocket going in any day now.

Orchard

Finish planting any new fruit trees, taking scions for grafting : they must come from year old wood with buds and should be stored in dark polythene bags in a cold place ( + 4C) .
The cherry tree has now been moved to its new home, not sure I'm up to grafting cuttings though.

Garden

Finish pruning roses and flowering shrubs. Transplant out into beds pansies, wallflowers and herbs (sage, rosemary and mint)
Off to market on Sunday to start getting the bedding plants.
